Standing Against The Cuts

Over the last 10 years, over £220m has been cut from local services by Wolverhampton's Labour council. This includes the axing of 2000 jobs - one third of the workforce - and all but one of the city's youth centres closing. And despite the welcome anti-cuts stance taken nationally by Corbyn and McDonnell, Labour councils up and down the country are continuing with cuts and privatisation, with Wolves facing up to £28.3m more cuts by 2020. 

Talking about cuts to services, council leader Roger Lawrence said “enough is enough”. We agree, but getting the money that's been taken from Wolverhampton's budget by the Tories will need more than just words!
The Socialist Party says that councillors have a choice. Labour councils across Britain currently hold £14bn in spendable reserves. The could be used to set no cuts budgets and at the same time launch mass campaigns drawing in trade unions, service users and local residents to win back the money cut by central government over the last decade. 

This was the strategy used by Liverpool City Council in the 1980s, led by the Socialist Party's predecessor, Militant. Their campaign gave the "Iron Lady" Maggie Thatcher a bloody nose, winning back £30m which was used to build 5000 quality council homes, 6 leisure centres and create 2000 jobs. Just imagine what could be achieved against the weak and divided government of Theresa May!

On 2nd May, Socialist Party member Joshua Allerton will be standing in Oxley ward under the Socialist Alternative banner, to put the case for a socialist, no-cuts budget. We'll be using the next month to explain how the wealth, skills and resources that exist within our city and society as a whole should be used to benefit the working class majority, not the 1%.
